A couple's first dance is always a moment I dare not miss as my clients wedding planner. The first dance is a couple's way to tell their love story! There's something about the way my clients choose to show off their personality and style as a couple that I love witnessing again and again. I've seen a lot of great first dances, from the very touching and heartfelt to the super upbeat and fun. I can truly appreciate each style being a former dancer myself. I love seeing self-expression let out on the dance floor.
Since the start of my planning career I have always loved the standard dances that are seen at a wedding, from the Mother & Son dance to the Father & Daughter dance. But there is always something special about the couple's first dance. We are seeing more and more couples soliciting the assistance of their local dance studios to ensure their first dance is unforgettable. I've had the privilege of working with my local dance studio DLD Dance Center in Downers Grove, IL to provide first dance experiences unlike any other. The owner truly believes in self-expression and her passion for dance radiates within the walls of her studio. Dyanna Daniels is the owner/director and head choreographer at DLD. She also just so happens to be one of my old college dance team members and dear friend. At DLD Dance Center, Dyanna and her instructors offer many different styles of dance such as jazz, ballet, ballroom as well as fun hip hop routines for all ages!
They even offer "flash mob" routines for couples who want to really put on a show for their guests. This non-traditional take on the first dance brings in professional dancers and some non-professional dancers to pull off a surprise performance for wedding guests. Sometimes the couple is a part of it and sometimes they want to sit and enjoy, but my favorite is watching the guest's reactions once the couple joins in on the dance floor. Check out the DLD flash mob members in action in this video below.
Whether you have a classic first dance or a flash mob choreographed dance, each dance choice is unique and special in its own way and cannot be pulled off without some pretty epic music selections! Some couples choose one song to embody their love and others use a compilation. I often get questions regarding what type of song to select. With that I have listed a few of my favorites from slow classics to modern pop, I hope these selections can guide you in the right direction as you choose your first dance song!

No matter the song or the dance moves, a couple's first dance should truly be a reflection of them. Keep in mind that if you are not a dancer you shouldn't feel obligated to dance. There are plenty of other ways that we can create a moment for you. This day is about you and I know your guests only want for you to enjoy yourself and celebrate your union with or without busting a move! So dance to the beat of your heart and make your day one you will never forget!
